Each producer that wants to participate in the PGS must sign a producer promise to confirm their commitment to these standards. For independent producers, the promise must be signed by whoever is responsible for onsite practices (e.g. the owner or the farm manager). For producer groups, each individual member must review and sign a promise.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The promise is available in Sinhala, Tamil, and English and should be signed in the producer\u2019s primary language. Literacy rates are very high in Sri Lanka, but if there is a case that a producer is unable to read the promise, a producer group member or the PGS Coordinator can read it to them and get their mark to verify that they understood all points.

If eggs, dairy or meat products are certified\u00a0organic, it means that animals were only fed certified organic feed. If a producer is unable to source certified organic feed at this time, but they meet all other standards, they can qualify for a\u00a0free range\u00a0certificate. The free range certificate does not include the IFOAM Organic PGS logo.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Animal Husbandry Producer Promise<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I promise that I will farm according to free range and organic standards to improve the health of my animals, my family, my community, and the environment.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

1. I will keep animals in an environment where they can practice their natural behavior (e.g. moving freely, foraging, grooming, dust-bathing, feeding in grass fields).\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

2.\u00a0I will make sure animals have access to fresh drinking water at all times.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

3.\u00a0I will make sure animals have daily access to outdoor pasture with vegetation.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

4.\u00a0I will make sure that the outdoor pasture area includes shade and protection from predators.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

5.\u00a0If indoor housing is provided, I will make sure it provides adequate space for all animals to freely move and rest in a natural position.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

6.\u00a0I will not do any mutilations like beak or wing cutting, branding, dehorning, nose ringing, or ear notching. Castration will only be done with anesthesia.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

7.\u00a0I will use indigenous, locally adapted varieties when possible. I will actively maintain genetic biodiversity and will not use cloned or genetically engineered breeds.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

8.\u00a0I will ensure that feed does not include synthetic additives, growth promoters, GMOs, excrement, or byproducts from the same species.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

9. I will not give the animals any hormones, growth-promoting drugs, or prophylactic antibiotics.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

10.\u00a0If synthetic drugs or antibiotics are used to treat sick or injured animals, I will ensure that these animals are kept separately, and no milk, eggs, or meat are sold from these animals as free range or organic.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

11.\u00a0If transport is required, I will ensure that transport times are less than 4 hours, food and water is provided, and animals are handled calmly and gently to minimize stress.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

12.\u00a0If animals are slaughtered, I will make special efforts to minimize stress, pain, and suffering. Animals will be handled calmly and gently. Living animals will not be able to hear or smell dying or dead animals.<\/p>

FOR ORGANIC:<\/strong><\/p>

13.\u00a0I will ensure all feed is from a verifiably organic source that is under an accredited organic certificate or organic PGS.<\/strong><\/p>

I understand that my farm will be visited by an evaluation team. I promise to share my records and provide correct and accurate information.<\/p>
