Traditional plant-breeding methods take time. It can take 6 to 10 generations of plants to develop a new open-pollinated variety. In the mid-19th century, plant breeders developed a natural method of controlled crossing that speeds up the process. Using hybrid seed reduces genetic diversity, which can make the entire crop more susceptible to pests and disease.

The use of hybrid seeds has also disrupted the traditional cycle of seed saving.
