Equal Exchange is a worker-owned cooperative that has been bringing together small farmers and citizen-consumers since 1986. Through their success, they aim to demonstrate the contribution of cooperatives and Fair Trade to a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable world. Equal Exchange forms direct, long-term partnerships with small farmer organizations worldwide. They started with organic coffee, tea, and chocolate, and later expanded to banana, avocado, olive oil, dried fruit, nuts, and more. Products are available online and supplied on a wholesale basis to stores, cafes, offices, churches, and other community partners. Equal Exchange has more than 130 worker owners and a network of citizen-consumers that join together for shared learning, events, and campaigns to build a more democratic food system. In return, they supply bags of compost fertilizer or fresh ecologically grown produce on a quarterly basis. M\u00e1s Compost, Menos Basura uses their platforms to raise environmental awareness and coordinate local environmental action. They conduct workshops and training programs on home composting, gardening, and related environmental topics and provide logistics support for local environmental partners that offer cooking oil collection, plastic recycling, and refill services. They have been working with their signature material, decommissioned London fire hoses, since 2005. They also rescue parachute silk, offset printing blankets, jute and hessian coffee bags, shoe boxes, tea sacks, and auction banners. Since 2017, they have been partnering with the Burberry Foundation to help rescue and transform Burberry leather off-cuts. Profits from the fire house collection are donated to the Fire Fighters Charity, and profits from the leather collection are donated to Barefoot College to train female solar engineers. In 2021, Elvis & Kresse transitioned their headquarters to New Barns Farm to work towards being Net Regenerative by sequestering carbon and improving biodiversity. Their name means “black gold” and refers to their belief that healthy soil is the key to regenerating food systems and communities. Homeward Bound of Marin started as a single emergency shelter in 1974 and has evolved to become a leading force in ending homelessness in Marin County, California. They provide shelter, transitional housing, counseling, job training, credit repair and money management classes, and a wide range of other services to adults and families experiencing homelessness. The heart of their job training program is Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, which works closely with their social enterprise ventures: Wagster Treats dog biscuits, The Key Room event space and catering service, Halo HomeMade truffles, honey, and preserves, and Fresh Starts celebrity chef events. Homeward Bound of Marin is registered as 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and pioneered the first nonprofit IPO, an “Immediate Public Opportunity…to end homelessness” by offering fundraising “shares” to develop new facilities. Artisans are able to work from home, which enables women to earn additional income while managing their domestic and social responsibilities. The Color Caravan upcycles waste fabrics, works with natural dyes, and prioritizes natural materials like wool, cotton, and jute when possible. In 2018, they started a creative learning and cultural initiative called Kala Jamghat that uses theater, storytelling, art, craft, nature, and music to teach life skills and social awareness to young people in the village of Naggar. The founder of The Color Caravan serves as a mentor and volunteer for multiple social initiatives and craft enterprises and facilitates cultural immersive experiences focusing on indigenous crafts, food, and forest healing. Designs in Mind is a working studio in Shropshire, where adults living with mental health challenges work together on ambitious, experimental art and design projects. Together, they are finding ways to live life, challenge mental health stigmas, and transform what a mental health “service” looks and feels like. Members develop studio skills with print making, textiles, glass, ceramics, wood, wire, and recycled materials, learn to work within a group, and create commissioned artwork, public art spaces, and retail products that are sold online and through Jolt, their high street shop. Tasks are broken down so that on a bad day, when decision making seems impossible, makers can help with backup tasks. Members are creatively challenged and work with purpose, building their self-worth and discovering new aspirations for the future. Designs in Mind offers a virtual studio for new referrals, design workshops, and support from “listen and connect” team members and volunteers. They are a member of Social Enterprise UK.<\/p>

The Key Room operates as a certified Bay Area Green Business with efficient lighting and rooftop solar panels for electricity and hot water. Fresh produce is often sourced from their own gardens, and service items are compostable, recyclable, or reusable whenever possible. All proceeds are used to support Homeward Bound, Marin County’s largest provider of shelter and training services for homeless adults and families. Almost Heaven Farms is a permaculture demonstration, training, research, and resource center and self-sustaining farm in the Ilam district of Nepal in the eastern Himalayas. Going beyond sustainable agriculture and organic farming, they work with local farmers to transition to agroecology and regenerative agriculture, adapt to climate change, and restore local soils, water sources, and ecosystems. Almost Heaven Farms also offers design, consulting, and ecological restoration services, four-week permaculture design internships, two-year diplomas, biofertilizer training, fermented food workshops, volunteer experiences, and other hands-on learning opportunities. The farm is known for its organic Nepali kimchi, fermented chili pepper sauce, and mango, pineapple and apple vinegars. Jaggery creates livelihood opportunities for people from disadvantaged communities and transforms industrial waste from northern India into bags, cases, and other functional everyday gear. They source, clean, and repurpose old seat belts, cargo lashing straps, decommissioned military canvas and parachutes, tarpaulins, inflatable bouncy castles, textile offcuts, and other waste materials and use high quality new hardware fittings to ensure durability. Products are designed to use materials as efficiently as possible and minimize waste. Jaggery employs staff from communities that have been discriminated against, what the Indian government calls Other Backward Classes and Economically Disadvanted Sections. They provide fair trade wages, English classes, and training in basic computing skills.
