While many of the Kuapa Kokoo farmers rely on natural crop protection methods, the Ghanaian cocoa board has been cautious about introducing fully organic production, so Divine Chocolate sources cocoa for their organic range from a cooperative of farmers in S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9. They became Nepal’s first supplier of certified organic and fair trade teas. KTE uses locally available organic inputs and Ayurvedic practices, maintains natural forest and biodiversity, prevents land erosion and soil degradation, and contributes to carbon sequestration. They provide fair trade wages and coordinate social initiatives through KTE Foundation including a cow bank project, a scholarship program for farmers’ children, construction of a primary school, a cooperative shop, building and maintenance of local roads and bridges, and other community services. Summerdown uses their harvest to create a unique range of peppermint chocolates, oils, herbal teas, and home fragrances. They source chocolate through the Cocoa Horizons project, which creates self-sustaining cocoa farming communities that protect children and nature. Summerdown uses compostable packaging for their tea bags and chocolate bars and is working towards plastic free alternatives for all products.
