Gone Rural was founded in 1992 to economically empower rural women in Eswatini through handwoven basketry, a traditional craft that is passed from mother to daughter. They provide materials, training, product design support, and market access. Gone Rural now works with hundreds of women in remote communities and is recognized globally for their natural fiber baskets, bowls, trays, tableware, wall art, lighting, floor mats, and other contemporary housewares. Products are made from indigenous lutindzi grass and invasive sisal. Materials are sustainably harvested according to traditional customs, carefully dyed in their Malkerns workshop, and distributed to their network of community groups for production. Gone Rural’s enterprise model enables the women to earn an income weaving from their homes while still taking care of daily household tasks, childcare, and farming. They support community development projects through donations to their sister nonprofit, BoMake Rural Projects. Gone Rural is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).<\/p>

kanthari offers a 12-month, scholarship-based leadership training program that equips changemakers who have overcome adversity with the tools and skills required to start and sustain their own social or environmental initiatives. They welcome participants from around the world including people who have little to no formal education or are blind, visually impaired, or physically disabled. Their immersive, hands-on program combines seven months of on-campus training and five months of mentorship. The campus is in Trivandrum, Kerala on the banks of Vellayani Lake and is recognized for its natural building techniques, accessibility, and environmental responsibility. kanthari uses solar electricity, plants native species, and actively cleans the lake and removes invasive plants. Ninety percent of weavers in the Cielo network are women. Illiteracy rates are high in the region, and many artisans only speak Mayan, which makes it difficult for them to promote the hammocks on their own. Cielo reduces economic barriers and risk by supplying raw materials, organizing transportation, handling sales, providing fair trade wages, and enabling weavers to work from home on their own schedules. The completed hammocks are collected, quality inspected, and shipped worldwide.
