Alive and Kicking is a not-for-profit social enterprise that produces and distributes ethical sports balls, creates employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, promotes the right to play, and raises health awareness through sport. Their production centers in Kenya, Zambia, and Ghana serve eastern, southern, and western Africa and employ people living with disability, people without formal work experience, and people who have not completed their education. The sports balls are made from upcycled and waste materials, including old car or airline seats. Offcuts from production are used in local construction. All profits from ball sales are reinvested back into the organization and the local community. Alive and Kicking works with local partners to donate sports balls to children and young people from communities facing disadvantage and to provide sports coaching and health education on topics like mental health, HIV, malaria, and COVID-19. They also support sports programs for young people living with disabilities and have produced a bell sports ball for the blind. Alive and Kicking sports balls are available for free or at reduced rates to customers and community organisations facing economic and social disadvantage.

Ulpotha is an agricultural community in the jungle heartland of Sri Lanka that offers guests world-class yoga and an opportunity to live quietly in harmony with nature. The focus has been on restoration, through practice, of traditional lifestyles, biodiverse organic farming, forest cover, and waterways. Opening Ulpotha to visitors allows the experience to be shared and generates some of the financial resources needed to sustain it. Ulpotha is located at the foot of the Galgiriyawa mountain with a traditional reservoir on one side and green paddy fields on the other. By design, there is no electricity and life is lived by the rhythm of the day. Paths and accommodation are lit by lamps and lanterns. Most of the vegetarian food served at Ulpotha comes from onsite organic gardens and rice paddies. The all-inclusive price includes accommodation, meals, snacks, and drinks, two yoga classes a day, massage, guided forest walks, and excursions to nearby archaeological sites. Ayurveda treatments are available. Ulpotha nurtures close ties with the surrounding communities. They offer a free Ayurveda clinic that treats approximately 150 patients per week and they have provided support to local temples, shrines, schools, hospitals, village-level charities, and other initiatives.

As One Network Suzuka Community started in 2001 as an initiative to help create a new society and a new harmonious way of living and working together. The community has developed the ScienZ method, which stands for Scientific Investigation of the Essential Nature from the point of Zero. By investigating and clarifying the essential nature of different topics, they aim to move beyond fictions that humans have created, such as borders, rules, and money, and design and realize a better way of human living. The ScienZ Institute studies essential human nature, the ScienZ School helps people grow as individuals and make full use of their own abilities, and the As One Network Suzuka Community is an experimental urban ecovillage where people practice a different way of living. Community initiatives include farming activities on abandoned land, a popular lunchbox delivery service with local produce from the farms, reforestation of the Satoyama woodland, study tours, and educational programs. As One Network hosts visitors from around the world and has exchange programs in Korea, Brazil, and Switzerland. They are part of the Global Ecovillage Network, Gaia Education, Local Futures, and the Transition Town movement.

Grace Chocolates supports women who have touched the criminal justice system in Scotland. By making and selling chocolates, the women have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain work experience, certificates, and qualifications, build confidence and resilience, and find rewarding and fulfilling long-term employment. Evidence shows that having a job helps break the cycle of re-offending, which is good for the women, their families, their communities, and society. Grace Chocolates prioritizes quality natural ingredients and offers vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free options. Custom tags and packaging are available for wedding favors and events. Grace Chocolates is an initiative of Positive Changes, a registered Community Interest Company in Scotland. A team of volunteers helps pack and sell chocolates, assists with office tasks, and supports the women on their journey towards a different life. All profits are reinvested back into the organization to expand services.

Girls Make Waves empowers women and girls through surfing. They work with communities where water sports are male-dominated and the women and girls are stuck in domestic roles with little opportunity to engage in sports. The program builds athleticism into daily routines and is a way for women to have fun together in a safe, equitable space while preserving the boundaries of culture. Girls Make Waves is connected to nonprofits and surf-related initiatives around the world and has projects in Sri Lanka, Hawaii, and Mauritius. In 2018, the Arugam Bay Girls Surf Club became the first female surf club registered through the Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka.

The Social Innovation Lab enables change-makers to build sustainable social enterprises, create ecosystems that support social innovation, and push for human-centered policy-making. The Hatchery is an early-stage social enterprise incubator; the Social Innovation Consultancy offers impact assessment services to organisations dedicated to improving and measuring their footprint; Beyond the Buzz, their research wing, supports data-driven, evidence-based strategy and policy making; and SILSkills is a series of knowledge workshops and immersion programs to benefit the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Pakistan. Social Innovation Lab has worked with over one hundred social enterprises that have impacted millions of people in Pakistan and beyond. They prioritize innovators working in low-income communities or designing products and services that cater to underprivileged areas. In response to recent environmental catastrophes, SIL is strengthening its focus on circular design and regenerative development approaches. Social Innovation Lab is a member of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, Global Social Entrepreneurship Network, the Talloires Network, and Frontier Incubators.

TreeKid designs and manufactures ethical children’s clothing and reusable face masks. While there is a growing interest in sustainable sourcing, parents often choose fast fashion for their kids because they grow so quickly. TreeKid raises awareness about the true costs of our throwaway textile culture, develops patterns, materials, and manufacturing processes that increase sustainability, and creates hard-wearing clothing that will last to pass along to future generations. Each garment is adjustable so it can be worn three times longer than conventional children’s clothing. They use recycled denim, colorful offcuts, natural and environmentally responsible dyes, and materials that meet Oeko-Tex and Global Organic Textile standards. As part of their zero waste philosophy, patterns are carefully laid out to minimize fabric waste and any remaining scrap material is used for pockets, lanyards, and cushion stuffing. Customers are encouraged to return preloved TreeKid garments for repairs if needed. When a garment no longer fits a child, it can be returned to the TreeKid workshop for a discount on a future purchase and will be stocked in TreeKid’s online secondhand store at a reduced price. For the adjustable overalls line, TreeKid partners with Social Studio, a social enterprise that provides support and training for asylum seekers and immigrants in Australia.

Leela is returning to the roots of yoga practice by providing natural, harm-free yoga rugs and gear. Yoga teaches us to be more conscious about how we are living and what we are surrounded by, including the materials we use and how they are made. Before the fitness industry introduced synthetic mats, yoga was traditionally practiced on rugs. Leela Yoga Rugs are made from Indian cotton by traditional weavers in Tamil Nadu. They offer a better grip and a healthier alternative for practitioners, producers, and the environment. Leela is committed to fair trade and zero waste practices. They use cotton that is leftover from other projects to produce their unique and colorful yoga rugs.

Save Pages to Save Trees is a voluntary initiative focused on recycling the pages from partially used exercise books into new notebooks and school books. School books are provided free of charge to rural schools and people in need. Income from the sale of notebooks is used to purchase the supplies needed to make the donated school books. Save Pages to Save Trees conducts workshops for voluntary service organizations that want to get involved, for example, Rotaract clubs, girl guides, scouts, and community organizations. In addition to teaching participants how to upcycle notebooks, they also aim to inspire them to be more sustainable, save trees and forests for future generations, and care for those in need.

Beady Eyes create eyeglass and sunglass chains, necklaces, earrings, and other wearable art from recycled beads and environmentally responsible materials. Each piece is unique. Beads are sourced from secondhand shops that benefit the Diabetes Foundation, Salvation Army, and Red Shield Appeal and from friends and family that have broken jewelry they would like to repurpose. Beady Eyes focuses on the contributing to the local community. They participate in marketplace events that bring young creatives together in an inclusive environment and raise funds for charity, and they use their platform to showcase other local creatives.

Bellybees was started by young parents to make natural infant and toddler food more convenient and accessible in Sri Lanka. They worked with leading pediatricians to develop a healthy, locally sourced alternative to imported brands and supplied it islandwide through supermarkets and home delivery. Bellybees has since expanded their product range to include educational toys, children’s clothing made locally from natural materials, and food and beverage options for the whole family. They offer vegetable and fruit juices, iced tea, king coconut water, relishes and spreads, baking mixes, soups, and infused oils with no added colors, flavors, or preservatives. Glass bottles and other recyclable packaging materials are prioritized. Bellybees provides livelihood opportunities for women and has a fully female workforce. They supply food products and books to underprivileged children and donate to support early childhood education.
