Social Franchise

Good Market supports a movement of individuals and organizations that prioritize health, social impact, and the environment in their decision making. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, Good Market does not have private owners and does not issue dividends. Profits are reinvested to expand services for the Good Market community.

Most of the revenue for Good Market services in Sri Lanka comes from a successful organic and natural food shop in Colombo. There have been many requests to expand this model to other areas, including Battaramulla, Mount Lavinia, Negombo, Kandy, and Galle.

Good Market is expanding through a social franchise model. A social franchise uses the commercial franchising approach to replicate a proven model for greater social impact.

Good Market feels that a neighborhood market concept is more appropriate to Sri Lanka’s current traffic problems than a supermarket format. Rather than establishing a large store as a hub for all customers, the plan is to set up small neighborhood Good Market shops wherever they are wanted and needed. The shops will provide an attractive community space and make organic and eco-friendly products more accessible and affordable.

Social Franchise

As the franchisor, Good Market offers:

  • Brand reputation

  • Social media management and marketing services

  • Online curation system for suppliers

  • Participatory guarantee system for organic farm products

  • More than 1,000 approved products covering all key categories

  • Cloud-based inventory management and accounting systems

  • Training programs for managers and shop team members

  • User-friendly operations manuals, checklists, and monitoring systems

  • Ongoing technical support services

A franchisee would need to demonstrate:

  • Adequate capital for franchise fees and startup costs

  • Prior management experience

  • Commitment to the Good Market concept and standards

This approach enables franchisees to quickly develop a revenue-generating business that they can be proud of, with the knowledge that all franchise fees go to a not-for-profit social enterprise and will be reinvested to expand outreach, services, and impact.
