Bèkske: Rwandan Empowerment Coffee

Bèkske offers specialty coffee in the Netherlands and uses its proceeds to empower female coffee entrepreneurs in Rwanda. They source from and support a group of women coffee growers who survived conflict-related sexual violence during the Rwandan genocide. Bèkske pays an extra euro on top of the nationally determined price per kilo of berries, shares 25 percent of profits with the growers, and provides training and guidance related to land, entrepreneurship, investment, gender equality, and other issues. In the Netherlands, they employ women with war trauma and other labor market barriers to pack and ship the coffee. Bèkske is a member of Social Enterprise NL and Business Open Duurzaam.

AGC Innovate converts plastic waste into road construction material in Sri Lanka to reduce pollution while improving mobility and accessibility. Their plastic-modified asphalt concrete (PMAC) was developed as an alternative to conventional asphalt to reduce import dependency and construction costs, improve road durability, lower maintenance needs, and divert plastic waste from landfills. They collect used lunch sheets and non-recyclable polythene waste from local government authorities, provincial landfills, and private partners, and produce PMAC for roads, car parks, driveways, and other projects. AGC Innovate supports community projects and conducts university programs to promote circular economy practices.
