Belu offers British mineral water, tonics, mixers, and filter systems and invests all profits towards reducing carbon emissions, supporting water stewardship projects, working towards a circular economy, and bringing clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene to everyone everywhere. Their natural still and sparkling mineral water is sourced in Wales, never exported, and packed in bottles made locally from lightweight recycled glass or 100 percent recycled plastic. Their tonics and mixers are made with sustainably sourced ingredients and lower-than-average sugar. Belu encourages people to choose tap or filtered water when possible. For hospitality businesses and workplaces, they offer premium filtration systems for still, sparkling, cold, chilled, and hot water, branded refillable bottles, and regular maintenance services. Refill systems reduce carbon emissions, waste, storage requirements, and costs. Belu was carbon neutral according to PAS 2060 standards for 10 years. They have now shifted their focus from offsets and certification to carbon management and reduction. Belu contributes 100 percent of net profits to WaterAid and other impact partners using unrestricted funding models. They are an accredited Living Wage Employer and a member of Social Enterprise UK.

Gebana

Gebana is changing the rules of global trade to benefit small farming families, local economies, and the environment. It started in 1973 in Switzerland with the “banana women,” a women-led movement for fairer global trade, and became a trading company in 1998. They work with subsidiaries and partners to directly source organic fresh and dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, coffee, tea, spices, and pantry items from family farmers in Burkina Faso, Togo, Brazil, Greece, Tunisia, Palestine, Brazil, and Mexico and meats, cheeses, and vegan alternatives from Switzerland. Fresh produce can be ordered in advance through their online shop and is sent seasonally when it is ripe and freshly harvested. Gebana provides training in organic farming, supports certification, and invests in local processing and packaging. In addition to paying fair trade and organic premiums, Gebana gives 10 percent of the sales price in their shop back to farming families. Profits are shared equally with employees, customers, and shareholders. Gebana is certified organic according to European Union and Swiss standards. They are a guaranteed fair trade member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and a member of SENS Suisse, Social Entrepreneurship Netzwerk Deutschland (SEND), Swiss Fair Trade, Das Good Food Collective, and Climate Alliance Switzerland.

Woman Farmer Foundation

Woman Farmer Foundation empowers and develops Swazi women and youth through sustainable agriculture to improve food security and rural livelihoods in Eswatini. They are creating a network of model women and youth farmers across the country who can inspire and mentor their communities with a focus on climate adaptation and resilience and agribusiness development. Woman Farmer Foundation offers mentoring, coaching, workshops, training, and seminars, facilitates financing and market linkages, and organizes the annual Woman and Youth Farmer of the Year competition. This has given women and youth farmers a greater voice and platform to excel in a patriarchal society. Woman Farmer Foundation mobilizes funding and support for their programs in order to offer them free or at low cost to rural populations.

Yunus Thailand builds long-term relationships while prioritizing the independence and autonomy of the communities they work with. They are a United Nations Environment Program accredited organization, a member of UNESCO’s Global Citizenship Education Network, and part of the Yunus network of social business organizations. 9Trees is tackling climate change by restoring woodland habitats, promoting biodiversity, creating rural employment, and connecting more people to nature. Rather than selling carbon credits, they create carbon sinks in the form of professionally managed broadleaf woodlands for wildlife and people. Nine trees is the number required to balance the personal carbon footprint each year of an average UK citizen. 9Trees sources native saplings from responsible local tree nurseries, partners with landowners who care about their mission and agree to protect the site for at least 50 years, ensures management and aftercare, and provides updates to supporters. Every site undergoes a rigorous ecological assessment before planting, and planting is done by conservationists local to the planting site. By planting the right trees in the right place, 9Trees promotes biodiversity and enhances habitat corridors. They also offer activities for local communities to enjoy such as team-building days, eco therapy sessions, and woodland walks. 9Trees is a Community Interest Company (CIC) and reinvests all surplus towards their mission. PonyUp for Good

PonyUp for Good turns decommissioned technology into fresh meals for people in need. They collect unwanted devices, provide a secure data cleaning service, sell the technology to wholesale partners for refurbishment and reuse, and donate 50 percent of the profits to SecondBite, Australia’s largest fresh food rescue charity. Their model reduces e-waste and food waste, prevents toxic chemicals from entering landfills and waterways, improves access to affordable second-hand technology, and feeds vulnerable people. PonyUp for Good works with corporate clients to develop engagement programs for their employees that include education on e-waste and food waste, collection points for them to bring e-waste from home, and opportunities to volunteer with SecondBite. Re4Earth

Re4Earth supplies sustainably sourced zero-waste products to help people change their everyday habits and make our earth a better place. They offer reusable metal straws, beeswax wraps, bamboo toothbrushes, plant-based dental floss in reusable containers, bamboo and cotton earbuds, and natural balms. Their packaging and stickers are plastic-free, home compostable, and made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified recycled paper and soy-based inks. Products are shipped in recycled mailers from Noissue. For every ecommerce purchase, Re4Earth donates through Stripe Climate to a coalition of businesses accelerating long-term carbon removal. For wholesale and corporate customers, they donate to a select list of not-for-profit environmental organizations. Re4Earth also participates in direct action. They are part of the World Wildlife Fund’s “Adopt A Beach” citizen science initiative to combat plastic pollution. They clean their adopted beach in Piraeus four times a year, record the amount and composition of waste, and upload the data. Re4Earth uses their platform to encourage people to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.

Unseen Tours

Unseen Tours offers alternative London walking tours led by guides who have experienced homelessness. The tours offer a unique insight into London life and meaningful work opportunities while giving visibility and a voice to people who often feel unseen and unheard. Homelessness can happen to anyone, for all sorts of reasons such as redundancy, relationship breakdown, or illness. By enabling people to spend time with homeless and formerly homeless individuals, Unseen Tours hopes that people may rethink what it means to be homeless. Tours are free for people who have experienced homelessness over the past year. Unseen Tours offers training and support for people affected by homelessness to curate and lead their own London walking tours. Breadwinners helps refugees and young people seeking asylum in the United Kingdom access meaningful work by producing organic artisan baked goods for London and Brighton markets, cafes, restaurants, and businesses. They produce fresh sourdough bread, pastries, and cakes from Shipton Mills organic flour. Breadwinners offers work experience, paid employment, training, mentoring, and the skills and confidence to move into long-term independent work. Their original market manager program was for people with new refugee status but no work experience. They later expanded to Risers, a market assistant program for young people seeking asylum, and Proofers, an online sales representative program for participants to develop further customer service experience and IT skills. Breadwinners promotes the integration of newly arrived individuals into the UK and helps change negative perceptions of refugees by demonstrating their skills, hard work, and positivity. They are an accredited Living Wage Employer and member of Social Enterprise UK, Refugees Welcome, and Lift the Ban. CJEAO

Carrefour Jeunesse Emploi d’Abitibi-Ouest (CJEAO) was started in 1996 to support young people and newcomers in Abitibi-Ouest, Québec with social and professional integration. They offer youth empowerment programs, migrant support services, group activities for skill development, and individual career counseling and support personal autonomy, entrepreneurial culture, healthy lifestyles, and prosocial behavior. Their JOBSTAT site includes jobseeker profiles and jobs available in Abitibi-Ouest. Services are available free of charge and are provided in partnership with government ministries and private enterprises committed to community and youth development. The Skill Mill

The Skill Mill employs young ex-offenders to provide environmental services in their local area. Young people with a criminal record often face barriers to accessing education, training, and employment opportunities that would enable them to move forward with their lives. Through The Skill Mill, they receive six months paid employment, practical work experience, accredited training, a nationally recognized qualification, and support to access follow-on employment. Participants acquire knowledge and skills by working alongside local contractors and partners to maintain urban green spaces and rural land, clean waterways, reduce flood risks, improve river health, and develop horticulture and water management skills. The Skill Mill reduces reoffending rates, increases community safety, improves the local environment, and strengthens civic pride and care for public spaces. They also organize World Cleanup Day, an annual global event that mobilizes citizens, community groups, corporations, and government bodies to participate in a day of action. Beyond Bins specializes in customized designs for awards programs, conferences, sustainability events, and corporate gifts. They also offer interactive workshops and demonstrations for sustainability campaigns. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own bottles and have the opportunity to sort and shred plastic at the event. In addition to diverting plastic waste from landfills and waterways, Beyond Bins has led to new attitudes about waste. Participating communities identify as being part of the solution and the transition to a circular economy, and they view plastic as a valuable material that can generate income.

Interestingly Different

Folkweave

Jeypore, Odisha, India

Folkweave aims to revive the natural dye, handloom weaving, and embroidery heritage of the Koraput region of Odisha to enhance women’s livelihoods, protect the environment, and address unjust power relations. The transition to industrial fabrics and synthetic dyes has increased the vulnerability of traditional dyeing and weaving communities and led to high rates of outmigration. Folkweave works with local women to manually dye textiles with locally sourced plant-based materials. These yarns are used to produce handwoven and embroidered shawls, sarees, and fabrics with indigenous motifs. The women are able to work from home and have formed a mutual benefit trust.

Back To Origins creates natural Sri Lankan food products to support consumer wellness, rural livelihoods, and community empowerment. The initiative was started by Ravana Garden, a sustainable boutique hotel in southern Sri Lanka, to engage staff and expand local employment opportunities during the pandemic. They source spices, herbs, and other ingredients from the hotel’s organic garden and from nearby farmers and produce spice blends, condiments, specialty coffee, and other natural food and drinks. All products are free from artificial flavors, preservatives, and other additives. Back to Origins contributes a portion of profits to local social and environmental causes including donations for youth initiatives, the local women’s association, medical camps for the elderly, the village school, beach cleaning, tree planting, and shramadana campaigns.

Defiant Sports

Defiant Sports aims to create fully inclusive sport and activity sessions by catering to everyone’s sporting needs and breaking the barriers that people with disabilities and marginalized groups often face. Green Machine recycles and refurbishes electronics in the United Kingdom to reduce pollution, emissions, and digital poverty. They collect unwanted IT equipment, provide secure data destruction services, and either refurbish the devices or break them down into parts for recycling. Refurbished equipment is sold at affordable rates or donated to local schools, charities, or people in need. Funds from selling recyclable materials and refurbished equipment are used to train young people in IT recycling, repairs, and services. Green Machine prioritizes trainees who face barriers to employment due to disadvantaged backgrounds or learning disabilities and helps them develop workplace skills and access formal qualifications. Upturn was started in 2004 to improve the lives of people from diverse groups and disadvantaged communities in the United Kingdom and help them overcome barriers to social mobility. They work with public, private, and third-sector clients to provide services and deliver projects that unlock people’s talent and aspirations, cultivate enterprise, and enable communities to prosper. MHFA England

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England aims to improve the mental health of the nation by training at least one in ten people in mental health awareness and skills. They provide expert guidance and training to organizations of all shapes and sizes to support mental health in the workplace and beyond. Their evidence-based training gives people the skills to spot the signs of poor mental health, the confidence to start a conversation, and the knowledge to signpost to appropriate support. MHFA England has training options to suit a range of timescales and budgets from basic mental health awareness sessions to a full Mental Health First Aider qualification. Courses are delivered in person or online through the MHFA England Online Learning Hub. MHFA England offers free and discounted training to people working with youth in the sports and recreation sectors, front-line workers, the National Health Service (NHS), and Black-led organizations. Girls Into Coding

Girls Into Coding was cofounded in 2018 by an 11-year-old and her mother to empower girls, particularly girls from underprivileged backgrounds, to engage in tech and engineering.
