The Earth Guardians are working to purchase and plant 1,500 trees as part of a reforestation project in Habarana.

Members participate in a revolving loan fund which provides low interest loans and funeral assistance. They also have the opportunity to join training programs and workshops on sewing, batik dyeing, and coconut fiber products. The Women’s Society sells these products through the shop and takes custom orders from socially and environmentally responsible individuals and enterprises. Members are able to work from home and are paid for their work. Any surplus is reinvested into the women’s society. The Telwatte shop also serves fresh juice and snacks for locals and tourists.

They started producing for personal use but decided to expand to serve others and scale impact. Some of the older girls are brought in after being abused or raped. In the future, the goal is to provide employment opportunities for these girls as they pass out of the orphanage.

Zero was started by a group of young volunteers who want to help Sri Lankans transition back to zero waste lifestyles. They teamed up with a group of rural women who are unable to access traditional employment opportunities to produce alternatives to single-use plastic products including school book covers, shopping bags, menstrual pads, diapers, lunch sheets, and straws. Their reusable book covers and shopping bags are made from fabric scraps from nearby handloom workshops and garment factories. They make beeswax wraps from fabric that has been naturally dyed with kitchen waste like coffee, turmeric, onion skin, avocado, and spinach. Cloth menstrual pads and diapers are made from fabric that has been naturally dyed with medicinal herbs including venivelgeta, rathmal, and kohomba. Zero conducts waste awareness campaigns in rural villages and schools and donates 10 percent of sales to install drinking water units in rural schools in the Galgamuwa area.
